How many apps do you have on your smartphone? And how many of those are really useful before you go out for a great bike ride?
One that finds the right route with all the best curves, one that joins the dots and works out the route, one that directs you as you ride and perhaps even one that indicates places of interest, and what else? Maybe one that indicates where you can fill up when you have been so distracted by all these apps that you suddenly realise you’ve been riding on reserve for the past 20km.
Well, we have the answer; actually not us but three young enthusiastic German bikers, and it’s called Calimoto.
With the motto “No more straight roads”, this multifunctional app places the rider and the passion for biking at the centre of everything.
Irrespective of whether you’re riding on your favourite route amongst breathtaking views, just going for a quick spin or on your way to meet up with a bunch of friends, Calimoto seems to be the perfect app for sharing your riding experience. You just have to look at its functions to realise that it seems to be tailor-made for us members of the #bearacer club and fits us like a glove.
First of all let’s talk about the bends! Anyone can simply go from point A to point B but how you get there is what makes all the difference to twist-and-turn fanatics like us. Calimoto uses a special algorithm to calculate only the twistiest and most panoramic routes on which to take you towards new adventures, but leaving you the option to customise your route by moving and adding waypoints until you find the route that’s perfect for you. As a matter of fact, all the twistiest roads and places of interest to bikers are clearly highlighted on the biking map, including filling stations, bike workshops and mountain passes.
What about when you’re on the road, you ask? Well, Calimoto behaves exactly like a GPS unit, telling you where to turn along the way, even without any internet connection thanks to its totally offline navigation facility. But the best is yet to come: thanks to the app’s trip recording function you can view your trip times, places visited and average speed at any time and save your routes travelled on the map to share later with whoever you wish.
And what about those spur of the moment trips where you don’t have time to plan anything? Well, no need to fret; simply plug in the length of the trip and Calimoto will do the rest and display some customised suggestions.
All you need to do is to download the app, strap on your helmet and take off on your next adventure!
Calimoto for Android is already available on Google Play, but a version of the app for iOS systems is currently under development.
